Opening the Door to the American Dream: Wankel's employee moves from refugee to hardware to Harvard
After seven years of refugee camps, Van Tran arrived in this country knowing little English and even less about retailing and hardware. Wankel's gave Van the opportunity to learn and to work while he pursued a Bachelor's degree at Hunter College of the City University of New York. Graduating summa cum laude, Van was awarded a Soros Fellowship to enter the PhD program in Social Policy at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government.

VAN TRAN, a young man only six years removed from Vietnam and now bound for Harvard, stands in an aisle of Wankel's Hardware on the Upper East Side, pointing to objects he did not know existed when he first passed through the store's turnstile. He picks up an air-conditioning filter. A filter? What was an air-conditioner? And what was that turnstile all about?
